Mental health describes emotional, psychological, and social well-being, and its quality is often measured by how adaptive they are in dealing with everyday stressors. Mental health enables people to use their abilities, be productive, make decisions, and play an active role in their environment. Inspired by Very Well Mind, here are activities you can practice to maintain your mental health.
Conduct Regular Exercises
Physical exercise can reduce stress and improve symptoms of anxiety disorders and depression, reduce levels of the body’s stress hormones, and increase levels of endorphins that affect mood and feelings of well-being. The type of exercise does not have to be strenuous, a simple 20-minute walk and you’ll probably notice the effect it has on clearing and calming the mind.
Get Enough Sleep
Not getting enough sleep can worsen mental health and cause mental stress. It is recommended to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. Try to stick to a consistent sleep schedule or go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, limit distractions such as using your phone before bedtime, and make sure to exercise during the day.
Helping Others
Research has found helpful behaviors and other types of social interaction are associated with reduced stress and even longer life spans. Try volunteering or even helping others in daily life.
Interact With Other People
Social interactions can reduce stress levels, improve symptoms of depression, and even benefit physical health. Research has found social relationships have a positive impact on health categories such as cancer, weight management, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Have a Positive Outlook in Life
There are many health benefits to using optimism and positive thinking in everyday life. Research has found that participants with anxiety disorders who practice positive thinking experience less anxiety than those who think negatively.
